Recently Dr Geoff Borlase, a lecturer at the University of Sydney, spent a week teaching UP students in the areas of Geriatric Dentistry and Complete Dentures.  This was Dr Geoffs third visit to UP, and a full week of lectures, clinic supervision and lab activities were carried out.  Dr Geoff is also a regular visitor to the Fiji Dental School, where he has run their denture program for many years.

During the week Dr Geoff demonstrated the correct way to make complete dentures on two lucky patients, and exposed students to the concept of “holistic dentistry”.  This involves understanding and managing patients (especially the elderly) in the context of their environment – not just focusing on their oral health.

At the end of his visit Dr Geoff donated some instruments and materials for denture making – which will be very useful in our clinic and lab.  We greatly value the input of teachers like Dr Geoff who come a long way to share their knowledge and skills with our students.
