Pedagogy Training

Strengthening Competency-Based Education (CBE) in Pharmacy through Pedagogical Training

To enhance the implementation of Competency-Based Education (CBE) in pharmacy education, the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Puthisastra actively supports both full-time and part-time lecturers to participate in national pedagogical training programs. From 27 to 31 October 2025, fifteen faculty members and educational staff from the Faculty of Pharmacy successfully completed the Basic Pedagogy Workshop for Lecturers in Health Institutions, organized by the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Cambodia.

This four-day workshop brought together lecturers from several universities, including the University of Puthisastra, Chenla University, and the International University. The program focused on strengthening modern teaching methodologies, assessment strategies, and learner-centered approaches aligned with the principles of CBE. By participating in this training, pharmacy lecturers enhanced their pedagogical competencies and gained practical skills to better design outcome-based curricula, implement active learning strategies, and conduct competency-oriented assessments.

This initiative reflects the Faculty of Pharmacy’s strong commitment to continuously improving the quality of pharmacy education in Cambodia and ensuring that graduates are well prepared for professional, patient-centered practice.

The Natural Product Contest Journey

The Natural Products Contest (NPC) is a flagship academic innovation program initiated by the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Puthisastra to encourage students to transform scientific knowledge into tangible, plant-based products while strengthening research, creativity, and entrepreneurial skills.

The first NPC was successfully organized in 2022, marking a historic milestone for the Faculty as the first official platform dedicated to student innovation in natural product development. In its inaugural year, 17 student groups from the University of Puthisastra were shortlisted for the final round, presenting a wide range of products such as creams, cosmetics, rose powder, body lotions, and cleansing oils. The final competition, held on August 15, 2022, featured product pitches, prototypes, and exhibitions, with Rose Powder winning first place, followed by Body Gel Mask, Jus Cool Spray, Cashew Milk, and Natural Hair Mask, while Organic Body Scrub and Zero Waste Soap received the Popular Vote Awards.

Building on this success, the second NPC was held in 2023 with 13 groups registered and 10 outstanding groups shortlisted for the final round. Students continued to demonstrate remarkable creativity through products including body lotions, sprays, mouthwash, balms, medicated oils, hair serums, and perfumes. The final showcase on May 30, 2023, awarded first place to Friendly Mouthwash, followed by Rice Paddy Herb, Rose Body Lotion, and Lemos Spray, with Charming Ginger and Jasmine Perfume receiving the Popular Vote Awards.

The third NPC in 2024 represented a major expansion of the contest, organized with the support of Khmer Enterprise and the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation. This edition attracted national participation, receiving 22 entries from various universities, with 16 groups shortlisted for the final round. Participants also benefited from entrepreneurship training in business planning, branding, and marketing. The final event was held on July 15, 2024, where JEK Scrub won first place, followed by Hydra Toner Pad and Holy Basil Cream, while Beetroot Lip Balm, Muntingia Cream, and Daily Sunscreen won the Popular Vote Awards. These achievements reflected students’ strong technical competence, teamwork, and entrepreneurial vision.

Following three consecutive successful editions, the Faculty of Pharmacy proudly launched the 4th Natural Products Contest 2025, scheduled for August 22, 2025, at the University of Puthisastra. NPC 2025 continues to emphasize the development of sustainable plant-based products in the areas of medicines, supplements, cosmetics, and functional foods, with the objectives of fostering innovation, strengthening multidisciplinary research skills, promoting natural product applications in Cambodia, encouraging collaboration between universities nationwide, and enhancing teamwork, problem-solving, and communication abilities. Botanical Garden

Medicinal plants have played a vital role in human healthcare as key ingredients in traditional medicines for thousands of years. It is reported that more than 80% of the world’s population still relies on medicinal plants as a primary source of healthcare. Botanical gardens worldwide play an important role in the conservation, cultivation, and utilization of plant species, as well as in research activities related to ecology, taxonomy, systematics, and biotechnology.

The Botanical Garden (Figure 1), located inside Building J, was originally established in 2012 as the Medicinal Plant Garden of the Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Puthisastra. Covering a total area of 100 square meters on the 3rd floor of Building J, the garden houses a living collection of approximately 100 medicinal plant species, including herbs, shrubs, and trees, arranged in a well-defined layout.

These cultivated plants are integral to practical pharmacognosy classes and natural product contests, serving as a living laboratory for undergraduate and graduate students. Students and recent graduates utilize the garden to obtain fresh plant specimens and raw materials necessary for research on herbal drugs and other natural products.

In 2025, the Faculty of Pharmacy undertook a major renovation to increase plant diversity and modernize the garden. The newly renovated Botanical Garden was officially inaugurated in a landmark ceremony attended by:

  • Prof. Ian Rouse, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Puthisastra
  • Prof. Chea Sin, Vice President of the University of Puthisastra
  • Prof. Chhea Sophearom, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy
